Dan Servantes
Welcome to my Harmonic store and blog! As a co-founder of Harmonic, I am stoked that you’re here checking out what we’re doing.

I’ll be honest, for the foreseeable future, my Harmonic store is largely going to be a reflection of the artists that are joining the platform. I’m so grateful to artists for listing their music here. Purchasing it and leaving a review feels like the least I can do. That said, I hope you click through and read my recommendations. At the very least, you’ll discover something new and get a sense for how I hear music.

My Hot Take

While you’re here, I have a hot take to share. There’s no bad music, only music that you like and music that you don’t like. I had this argument a few months ago with a friend whose music taste I hold in tremendously high regard. Because music is subjective, it’s impossible to objectively rank music or say that this song is better than that song. You can rank based on sales or play count or cultural impact, but you can’t objectively rank music based on quality. He disagreed – of course Eleanor Rigby is better than a 12 year-old's first home recording. The two things are in different leagues. Well...

If just one person likes a piece of music, it has value. And if just one person thinks that a lofi bedroom-produced EP is better than Revolver, then who’s to say they’re wrong? You can't tell someone else what they like and don't like. I know, I know, it's a cheesy sentiment, but I encourage you to view Harmonic music and recommendations through that lens. Harmonic is home to independent artists that want to go their own way and try something outside of the confines of what other people expect them to make.

True originality might mean that a record is an undeniable achievement of musicianship and production that is just waiting for the right ears to listen. True originality could also mean out-of-the-norm artistic inclinations or four verses with no chorus or maybe a questionably placed slide whistle solo. But there's a curator out there that is going to tell you why that slide whistle f***ing rocks, and it's going to blow your mind. Go through indie music looking for something new, and you'll find it.

Hit Me Up!

Harmonic is small right now, and that means I (and the rest of the Harmonic team) am very accessible. Don't be afraid to reach out if you have questions, ideas, or just want to chat music. My email is dan@harmonic.fm. I want to hear from ya.

Thanks again for checking us out. I hope we get to trade some music recs in the future.
