Growing up obsessed with the Beatles, I kept noticing something: the sonic experimentation of 1960s psychedelia and hip-hop aren't as far apart as people think. Both reach for reverb, tape loops, sampling, layered sound. Both have something to say beyond the music. Voyages started from that overlap.
I composed, wrote, produced and mixed everything remotely, building up the tracks layer by layer and sending them out to Tim Condor in Manchester and more than 20 musicians across the world. That process shaped the sound. There's a lot of space in this record, a lot of texture. Vinyl noise, tape hiss, dusty English soundbites, prehistoric synths. I wanted it to feel like you'd unearthed something that wasn't quite meant for your ears.
Rapper Cavalier, known for his work with Quelle Chris and his appearance on Stones Throw's Quakers II, also features on the album. He fit the world of the record immediately.
