About the Album
I first write the chords of this song in 2018, in my childhood bedroom on my piano. I kept this voice memo in a safe place, and last year, I decided that it was finally time to do something with this progression. I had weekly session with artist producer and recently Berklee graduate Gab De Soul. One day, I came to his home studio tired, and drained in pressure from comparing myself to others. Also, for some reason, I’ve been looking to the night sky since I’m a kid, and the stars always guided me through my dreams, still today. I needed their presence a lot at that time, and decided to write a song about them to honor their presence and express my gratitude. Through our songwriting process, the song turned to be itself a perfect comparison between human beings, and stars. Per millions on earth or in the sky, the stars want to be seen as much as we do. However, they always stand in the shadow of this one sun, as we measure ourselves against the brightest presence in the room, the most followed, the most celebrated, the one who “made it.” The shine of those person can feel so overwhelming that it dims our own existence. We begin to believe that if we are not seen like them, we are not shining at all. This song is carrying a message of self-empowerement : even if I’m lost in the darkness, I will find my very own light, no matter who would be able to see it or not, to « Set Me Free ».
